Latinos Aventureros connects comunidades to the outdoors through bilingual adventures, intergenerational programming, education, and community care, nurturing health, belonging, and environmental stewardship.

Our Story · Nuestra Historia

Latinos Aventureros was born in the middle of a pandemic, in a time filled with uncertainty, but also possibility.

In 2021, Vivianette Ortiz, originally from Puerto Rico and living in Gastonia, NC, and Sandra Aguirre, originally from Honduras and living in Morganton, NC, were both single moms who saw a need in their communities. Many familias did not have easy access to information about recreation, trails, and outdoor spaces where they felt welcomed, represented, and invited to belong.

“We didn’t see ourselves represented outdoors. Knowing the health benefits of being outside and connecting with nature, we wanted to be a stepping stone, so that trails could feel like rainbows.”

So they began the way community often begins. With one invitation. One gathering. One shared hope.

During Hispanic Heritage Month in 2021, they hosted a sunrise hike. Twenty people showed up.

And from that first walk, Latinos Aventureros began to grow.

Under Vivianette’s leadership, what started as one hike has become a community movement with more than 11,000 members, 30 volunteer leaders, and over 485 bilingual events across four states.

Latinos Aventureros nació en medio de una pandemia, en un tiempo lleno de incertidumbre, pero también de posibilidad.

En el 2021, Vivianette Ortiz, originalmente de Puerto Rico y viviendo en Gastonia, Carolina del Norte, y Sandra Aguirre, originalmente de Honduras y viviendo en Morganton, Carolina del Norte, eran madres solteras que vieron una necesidad en sus comunidades.

Muchas familias tenían poco acceso a información sobre recreación, senderos y espacios al aire libre donde pudieran sentirse bienvenidas, representadas y parte de algo.

“No nos veíamos representadas al aire libre. Conociendo los beneficios de estar afuera y conectar con la naturaleza, queríamos ser un puente para que los senderos pudieran sentirse como arcoíris.”

Y así comenzaron, como muchas veces comienza la comunidad. Con una invitación. Con una caminata. Con una esperanza compartida.

Durante el Mes de la Herencia Hispana en el 2021, organizaron una caminata al amanecer. Llegaron veinte personas.

Y desde esa primera caminata, Latinos Aventureros comenzó a crecer.

Bajo el liderazgo de Vivianette, lo que empezó como una sola aventura se ha convertido en un movimiento comunitario con más de 11,000 miembros, 30 líderes voluntarios y más de 485 eventos bilingües en cuatro estados.

Construido por voluntarios. Arraigado en la cultura. Impulsado por la comunidad.

Latinos Aventureros is sustained every weekend by 30 volunteer leaders who give their time, energy, and heart to this community.

They are parents, professionals, immigrants, outdoor lovers, and community builders, all brought together by the belief that nature belongs to everyone.

They plan the adventures. They scout the routes. They carry the gear. They welcome new faces. They show up with care, so others can feel safe enough to show up too.

Latinos Aventureros se mantiene vivo cada fin de semana gracias a 30 líderes voluntarios que entregan su tiempo, su energía y su corazón a esta comunidad.

Son madres, padres, profesionales, inmigrantes, amantes de la naturaleza y constructores de comunidad, unidos por la creencia de que la naturaleza le pertenece a todos.

Planifican las aventuras. Exploran las rutas. Cargan el equipo. Reciben a quienes llegan por primera vez. Se presentan con cuidado, para que otras personas también se sientan seguras de presentarse.
